Dear Patti, Jane and Scott
When I was a little girl, for Christmas, birthdays and sometimes in between, a parcel, a card and lots of love would arrive from Aunt Kay, Uncle Bob, Patti, Jane and Scott. Those five names strung together became a sort of rhyme in my young brain. I loved the gifts, so age appropriate, but who were these people? It would be years before I would fully realize who they were and the depth of Aunt Kay’s generosity and thoughtfulness. It was even more years before we met in person for the first time and even then I didn’t fully appreciate how we were related. As time passed of course, I did come to know that this was my Father’s sister and her family. Aunt Kay had a very big heart. She did not allow the distance of miles or severed relationships to prevent her from reaching out and embracing her Brother’s youngest daughter. As an adult I enjoyed visits in Fredericton and sporadic correspondence. Aunt Kay gave me the experience of a bigger family, of roots in another part of the country and a rich heritage from another part of the world. Aunt Kay did not just exemplify intelligence, as reflected in her career, she was also emotionally wise. My life was richer for knowing her and her family.
