Eugene Raymond "Gene" Barre Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our amazing dad, grandpa, brother, uncle, cousin and true friend Eugene “Gene” Raymond Barre. Gene peacefully passed away at the Northumberland Hills Hospital on August 5, 2025 with his two daughters by his side.

He had a tough, unwavering battle with cancer but his determination and will to live gave him the strength and hope to fight through all those hard times. He never gave up or complained. He went on his terms - with peace and dignity. Gene was in his 72nd year.

His family and friends were blessed to have Gene in their lives because of an amazing gift of a Kidney Transplant from his brother Paul on April 10th, 1978. We were all fortunate enough to have many more years of memories, love and laughs because of this generous gift. We are forever grateful to you, Paul Barre!

Gene touched many lives with his profound sense of humour, his love for singing and larger than life personality. Many people knew Gene from General Motors and his disc jockey days. For over a decade, “Lynn and Gene's Dancing Machine" entertained us from 1980-1995. Gene was a popular and well liked disc jockey with his loving wife Lynn by his side.

In his later years, Gene could be found at one of the local bars singing karaoke. He often was heard singing one of his favourite songs, “Unchained Melody” in his own special way.

Gene is also fondly remembered in Port Hope for his extravagantly decorated house with its massive display of Christmas lights — earning the prized nickname, “The Grizwold’s”. He took great pleasure each Christmas dressing up as Santa Claus and joyfully handing out candy canes to lineups of cars and awestruck children passing by.

Gene will be deeply missed by his daughters Jenny (Derek Matthews) and Tammy. Survived by his cherished grandchildren, Devon Matthews (Mel), Taylor Matthews (Brennan), Dylan Lollar (Sloan) and Mckenzie York. He was the beloved son to the late Ernest and Joan Barre. He was the loving husband to the late Lynn Barre and dear brother to Dave (Patti), Bonnie Green (late husband Daniel), Joanne (Jim), Paul (Carl), Lynda Green, Marie Piller (Wayne) and Rene. He will also be truly missed by his nieces, nephews, cousins, Karaoke family and many close friends.

A special shout out to Liz and John for the beautiful friendships you shared with our dad. They meant a lot to him.

A special thank you to the nurses in the Cancer and Supportive Care Clinic for all their support and kindness. To our Aunt Marie, Dr. Azzapardi, paramedics, Northumberland Hills emergency staff, ICU care, Dr’s and nurses for all your hard work in keeping our dad cared

for and comfortable. It takes a village and we truly appreciate you all! In honour of Gene, those who wish to make a memorial contribution feel free to donate to: Kidney Foundation - The Kidney Foundation of Canada , Ovarian Cancer Canada or our local Fare Share Food Bank.

Please join us at a later date for a beautiful Celebration of Life for Gene in the fall.
