After a lifetime of planning and organizing events, then dealing with the increasing effects of COPD, Carole said farewell on her own terms to family and friends on Tuesday, August 26th, 2025.
She leaves behind nephews Sean McLean, of New Brunswick; Jesse McLean, of Toronto; and great-nephew Liam McLean, of Bowmanville.
Carole began her career in Public Relations in 1970 working for Alcan, but quickly moved in Toronto to over 20 years of Public Relations work in the not-for-profit field. Along the way she gathered many lasting friends.
When she took early retirement at 60, she welcomed Korean students into her home.
Carole was insatiably curious and industrious, with a strong artistic flare. When she moved to Port Hope in 2006, she volunteered with many organizations including Friends of Music, the Port Hope Jazz Festival, Probus where she was a founding member, and the Garden Club. Her wide variety of interests included many art projects. She filled her house and others’ with mosaics she learned to make. She took up making totems out of old glass dishes assembled in interesting fashion, and she enrolled in a great and varied number of art classes.
Carole’s huge garden prompted her involvement with the Port Hope Garden Club. As with so many of Carole’s ventures, she became totally immersed. In her later years she took on every aspect of the Garden Club, from running the plant sale to being President and Past President of the Club. Her most significant role was to start and manage the monthly newsletter and to put out the Club’s yearbook. Carole’s influence was such that at her retirement this year, the Club established a yearly award to be given in her name.
Carole will be missed by a great many people.
In lieu of flowers, Carole has requested that donations be made to The Big Dog House shelter in Port Hope.
There will be a Celebration of Carole’s Life on September 13th, 2025 from 1:00pm to 4:00pm. If you know people who might be interested and are not on her computer list, please let them know.
Please RSVP to Carolyn Ray (905-377-3470, or rayjuliacarolyn@gmail.com) to provide an approximate number to prepare for.
