Peter Edward Madgett Obituary

Passed away peacefully, in his 79th year, in the Palliative Care Unit at Northumberland Hills Hospital in Coburg.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Lou Fallis-Madgett (CM); his two children, Benjamin (Regina) and Anna (Aaron); his four grandchildren, Elizabeth and Joshua, Calliope and Clover; his two sisters, Patricia Fife (Rev. David) and Mary Russell (Rev. Dave); and a large extended family. He was predeceased by his parents, Edward Dearness Madgett and Hope Patricia Twining.

Peter was born and raised in Bloor West Village in Toronto and was interested in music from a young age. He graduated from the Faculty of Music, University of Toronto, and subsequently worked as a professional musician in Toronto as a session player, respected teacher, member of the Toronto Chamber Players, Principal Double Bass of the Hamilton Philharmonic and, for over 30 years, member of the bass section in the Toronto Symphony Orchestra.

Peter was a member of St. Thomas’s Anglican Church, volunteering with the food ministry and supporting this faith community. He was an avid cook (having perfected a teriyaki chicken recipe that lives in the annals of family tradition.) He also loved motorcycles and rode his BMW to and from Roy Thomson Hall until the age of 50. Upon retirement, he was accepted into the adult art program at Central Tech, where he explored his love and talent for woodworking and visual art.

Eight years ago, Peter and Mary Lou happily moved from downtown Toronto to Port Hope, Ontario, where they felt welcomed into the community and enjoyed gardening, reading, and family gatherings.

Thank you to Dr. Francesco Mulé and the palliative care team at NHH, Rev. Canon Jesse Parker, as well as family and friends who stepped up to help ease his final days. Peter was grateful for the simple gifts in his life; love, music, books, family, friendship and faith. We witnessed his enjoyment of all of these. We love you Peter and you will be in our hearts forever.
