Douglas Ross Gellatly Obituary

In Loving Memory of Doug Gellatly, 1930 - 2025

With heavy hearts and profound sadness, we announce the peaceful passing of Douglas Ross Gellatly, in his 95th year, on November 21, 2025, surrounded by the love of his family in Barrie, ON.

Doug leaves behind his devoted wife of 73 years, Marion (Eckel) Gellatly, the love of his life. He was predeceased in 2024 by his beloved son, David. Doug will be deeply missed by his three daughters: Karen Bruce (Larry Lee), Jane Burgess (Rob Burgess), and Shelagh Ois (Harald Ois). He was a proud grandfather to Derek, Cameron, Emily, Brock, Carter, and Riley, and a delighted great-grandfather to Jackson, Jesse, Alex, and Charlotte—each one a source of immense joy.

Born in Kitchener, ON on February 7, 1930, Doug was the son of Harold and Pearl (Eagle) Gellatly and the seventh of eight children—Gwen, Audrey, Shirley, Connie, Jim, Reg, and Bruce—all of whom predeceased him.

Growing up in a large and lively household shaped Doug into the vibrant, adventurous, tenacious, and caring presence so many loved. Early on he discovered music as a church choir soloist and accomplished pianist. Throughout his life he remained passionate about music as well as travel, genealogy, online technology, and had an insatiable quest for knowledge, learning and exploring new things.

He attended Huron College at Western University and later earned a Master’s Degree in Education, setting the stage for a vocation that became both a profession and a purpose. Doug began teaching in northern Ontario communities before teaching in Almonte, Guelph, Kitchener, Port Hope, and Cobourg. He served as Principal of Port Hope High School (1972–1982) and Cobourg West High School (1983–1986). As an educator and administrator, he emphasized personal growth, excellence, and fellowship.

Doug and Marion settled in Port Hope and subsequently, Cobourg and became woven into the fabric of these communities. Doug’s natural curiosity and generous spirit led him to meaningful roles founding the Port Hope Probus Club, participating in the Capitol Theatre restoration project, as well as First Stages Theatre Company. One of his favourite accomplishments was helping create a unique social group—the “Pub Group”—a spirited circle of 32 members who met every other week for conversation, camaraderie, and libations. He also enjoyed being part of the local Scotch Club and Tennis Club.

Married in 1952, Doug and Marion built a rich and adventurous life together with their four children. A highlight of their lives was a sabbatical year in 1969, when the family moved to London, England. Doug studied at the University of London while the children attended local schools. The family then spent months traveling across Europe in a camper van, exploring ancient churches, wandering countryside roads, and discovering cultural treasures. It was a journey grounded in Doug’s enduring values: curiosity, learning, beauty, and seeing the world with open eyes. These values became a lasting gift to his children and this family adventure was always a great story to share with others.

Doug’s legacy lives on in the educational and social communities he strengthened, and, above all, in the family he loved. He will be deeply missed, his memory treasured, and his life celebrated by all who had the privilege of knowing him. May he rest in peace.

A Celebration of Doug’s Life will be held at a later date. Further details will be shared as they become available.
