Donald Bruce Elliott Obituary
With heavy hearts, we announce the peaceful passing of Donald Bruce Elliott on Wednesday, April 1st, 2026 at the Village of Taunton Mills in Whitby, in his 92nd year. Beloved husband of the late Edna Elliott, and dear friend of the late Jean Hall. Loving father of Darlene (John), and the late Denise. Cherished grandfather of Bryan (Liz), Robyn (Scott), and Rachel. Proud great-grandfather of Eva, Ricky, Waylon, Colton, Axel, and Tyson. Dear brother of Robert (Lynda) and his late brothers Russell, George, and Bruce (Shirley).
Donald was a life-long resident of Newtonville, Ontario. In 1969 Donald and his brother George took over their father’s garage and wrecking business of 40 years, Elliott Auto Parts. A licensed mechanic, he had a strong work ethic, and was always tinkering with something mechanical. Even well into his 80s, dad could be found underneath cars, fixing something in his own garage that had his own pit available. This same garage was a meeting place for friends who would visit and enjoy car talks and coffee.
He would transform what looked to the unskilled eye to be hunks of rusty metal into fully restored antique cars, owning many over the years. Some of his cars were used on movie sets in Toronto, including the movie Boardwalk Empire. He was a member of the antique car club, and for many years would take a favourite antique car on the London to Brighton tours with fellow members.
Dad also enjoyed travelling coast-to-coast across Canada and to several parts of the United States, including Florida, California, and Hershey, Pennsylvania, where he attended the annual flea market for many years – buying used car parts and the like for his restoration projects.
He loved honey dip, powdered white donuts, a good chip truck, and ice cream bars. Weekly trips were made to Captain George’s in Bowmanville, where he met up with family and friends, and the staff there treated him like their own.
Dad was a gentle, kind, and generous man, with blue eyes and a smile on his face. If you asked him when he retired, he would tell you he never did – he loved everything about cars, and he loved spending time with his family.
Friends and family are invited to a visitation for Donald on Friday, April 10th, 2026, from 12 – 2pm, at Rushnell Funeral Home (103 Mill Street North, Port Hope). A private burial will follow, for immediate family only.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to Sick Kids Hospital in Toronto, or a charity of your choice.
We would also like to acknowledge the superb care dad received over the past 1.5 years at the Village of Taunton Mills in Whitby. Staff lovingly referred to him as “Chevy”, and he was known for endless stories of his antique cars, and tips on buying cars and maintaining them. We are grateful to all of the staff from all departments.
