Marie Teresa Lytle Obituary
MARIE TERESA LYTLE (nee Quigley). As a result of an accidental fall, Marie died peacefully on May 21, 2026 at Ed’s House in Cobourg, Ontario. She was predeceased by her parents Wilfred & Mary Margaret Quigley and her husband David Lytle, the love of her life. She leaves behind her stepdaughter Cheryl Meyer and granddaughters Megan & Rachel. And she is deeply mourned by siblings Susan Barclay (Peter), Pat Quigley, Joan Semple (Patrick), Aggie Tose (Walter), Wilf Quigley (Kim) and Robert Quigley (Gurpreet). As well as her in-laws Victor Lytle (Janet deceased), Stan Lytle (Carolyn), Lucy Pike (deceased) and Linda Hawley (Rick).
Marie will also be dearly missed by her many nieces and nephews; Edward, James, Jennifer, Jaclyn, Sara, Kelly, Terry, Andrew, Patrick, Christian and Gaia on the Quigley side. And John, Kathy, Peter, Pauline, Scott, Shawn, Stephen, Dan, Dave, Beth and Amy on the Lytle side. In addition to many, many grands in the next generation. Marie was devoted to her nieces & nephews. She always made time to take them on trips, shows, amusement parks and holidays. She loved the rides at Canada’s Wonderland and was always keen to go on them with the kids while their moms were not so inclined. And there were always new bathing suits at Easter. These memories will live on in each & every one of them.
Marie is also mourned by friends Brenda Cowie & Marian Vanbruinessen. Pals since the late 60s after meeting up at Toronto Marlies games & subsequent summer jobs at Royal View Lodge in Haliburton.
Marie was born in Toronto on February 13, 1952 and raised there, moving to Port Hope with the family in 1973. She eventually landed a job at UniTrak Corporation Limited and never turned back, making it a career for the following 40 years. She travelled extensively with UniTrak and in the process developed a deep & lasting friendship with Bill Gorsline. His kids, Emma & Teddy often joked that Bill should ask Marie for some time off. In her last number of years at UniTrak Marie mentored both of them and she was particularly proud of Emma as she grew into her role of succeeding her dad.
Marie balanced her work & home life with community service at Port Hope Parks & Rec, whereby she founded the Port Hope Synchronized Swimming Club way back when, growing it steadily as coach & mentor to over 600 kids throughout 4 decades of volunteerism. She was tireless in her efforts; coaching, choreographing routines and sewing costumes for the annual shows. She even found time to judge provincial competitions further showcasing her unwavering commitment to the sport. She leaves behind a huge Artistic Swimming community who are all deeply mourning her loss.
Marie & Dave bought their first house together on Bramley Street in Port Hope, just down the road from her parents. The kids called it the Chestnut House. They created a warm & welcoming home and she loved nothing better than preparing gourmet meals for not only Dave but for both of their extended families and friends. There were lots of parties with great food and wine freely flowing at Bramley. They also traveled extensively across England & Europe visiting many castles and vineyards along the way.
In 2022, Marie & Dave moved to Empire Crossing, a retirement home in Port Hope and it gave Marie yet another opportunity to volunteer. She was on the gardening committee and was always willing to run errands for anyone or give someone a lift to appointments or pick up a pizza. She created a family at Empire, participating in many activities whether it be bingo, cardio workouts, watching the Blue Jays or wine & cheese socials. She was a bright light at Empire and will be dearly missed by one and all.
Donations in Marie’s memory may be made to Ed’s House Northumberland Hospice in Cobourg where she received tender loving care in her final days. It is truly a wonderful place & we will be forever grateful for their gracious assistance in our time of need.
Friends and family are invited to visit at Rushnell Funeral Home (103 Mill Street North, Port Hope) on Sunday, June 7th, 2026, at 10am. A memorial service for Marie will take place at 11am, with a reception at the Knights of Columbus Hall (1 Elias Street, Port Hope) immediately to follow.
