Betty Marie Hughes (née Smith) passed peacefully at Ed’s House Hospice on August 24, 2026, in her 98th year. Devoted wife of the late John “Jack” Hughes. Loving mother of Scott (Gail) and Karen Brereton (the late Dean). Cherished Gram to David Brereton, Deana and Dion Riley, Shawn and Kim, and Sara and Gill. G-Gram to Taylor Marie Riley, Dylan Riley and Isla Hughes. Predeceased by her siblings, Dorothy Austin (Bill), Donna Morlock (Bob) and Ted Smith (Katy).

Betty will be missed by many nieces, nephews and extended family. The family wishes to thank Dr. Knackstedt, the Northumberland Hills Hospital Emergency Department, the 2A nurses, Ed’s House, and her compassionate caregiver and dear friend, Jeanette, for the excellent care.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the Port Hope Legion, 29A Thomas Street, Port Hope on Saturday, September 12, 2026 from 1-4 pm. If desired, donations to Ed’s House would be appreciated by the family.
