Obituary of Alfred Edward Huffman

ALFRED HUFFMAN Master Model Maker Alfred Edward (Fred) Huffman, a man of great warmth, humour and creativity passed away peacefully in his century home in Port Hope, Ontario on May 12, 2010. He will be deeply missed by his wife Joan, son Christian, sister Linda, cousin Larry Hayter and wife Vicki, brother- in-law Louis Delamarter, along with other family members, many close friends and colleagues. Born in Toronto in 1939 and raised in Windsor by his mother Marjory and adoptive father Eugene, Fred's creative aspirations came full circle when his childhood love of model-making became his chosen profession at the age of thirty-six. High-profile individuals such as Conrad Black, Frederick Eaton, Harvey Kirk, prestigious yacht clubs like the R.C.Y.C. and corporate clientele that included Southam, De Havilland Aircraft and CN Marine, sought Fred out as one of Canada's premier model makers. His attention to detail, eye for craftsmanship and improvisational skills meant that Fred's creations transcended models to become museum-quality replicas. 'In effect, you're building a ship,' Fred was quoted as saying in one of the various newspaper and magazine articles that highlighted his career. He could shrink a 60-foot off-shore cruiser to a 30-inch model but keep intact every detail. Prior to becoming a model maker, Fred was a technical illustrator and an Art Director, but it was a year-long sabbatical on the island of Grenada in 1972 with his wife and young son that sparked his enthusiasm for sailcraft and fueled the desire to build model boats. Fred was also a photographer and a great lover of music, particularly jazz. He amassed a vast collection of vinyl that brought him much pleasure right to the end. Many thanks to Dr. David Moorsom, and all the VON's for their care and kind bedside manner. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society and / or the Chemo Centre at Cobourg General Hospital.
