I know it has been quite some time since he passed but he was the nicest and most caring teacher of port hope high school. When I was struggling on an exam he helped me to his best ability. As the years went on I eventually became a teacher myself, sure I don’t teach at phhs but I base my teaching methods off of mr Spencer. To be able to teach my students the way he did makes me think a lot about how good of a teacher he is

Mr. Spencer was a great teacher and such a positive and funny presence in the hallways of PHHS. He was a great neighbour to our family. My sisters and I babysat Emily and Rosie and Mr. and Mrs. Spencer were always so kind and friendly to us. We will really miss him around the neighbourhood. I also had the pleasure of returning to PHHS during my placement at teacher's college. I reached out to Mr. Spencer who kindly planned a whole schedule for me, making sure I could get the most out of the experience. He also took the time during his breaks to chat with me about being a teacher and give me some great advice for my future career. I am so thankful to him for this.
Thinking of Mrs. Spencer, Emily, Rosie, and their extended family.

Jim was one of the first people I met at Queen's University. Since that time we have lost touch but, I was still shocked and saddened by this news. I remember Jim being quick-witted, insightful, athletic and a lot of fun. We played sports together and went to some classes together. I can remember when Jim and Julie met and my heart goes out to Julie (and the rest of the family) for this loss and change in life plans. I guess what I'm trying to say is that during our time at Queen's Jim was a great friend. He is a key figure during my life at Queen's and he will be missed.

I will always remember Jim as a phenomenal person. He was kind, gentle, thoughtful and patient, someone who always gave so much of himself to help others. He was an outstanding teacher and colleague who constantly supported and inspired others in his own understated way. I loved the humorous quips that used to take place in the hallway between our neighbouring classrooms. The world has lost an incredible human being. I will miss him greatly. Rest in peace, my friend.

15 years ago I walked into a Monday morning Psychology class at Port Hope High School. This day was a tough one. It was the first day we all returned to school after our best friend Pam was killed in a tragic car accident. Our teacher Mr. Spencer stood at the front of the class and said something along the lines of, “Today will be the hardest day, but tomorrow and every day after things will get easier.” For me, he left on my desk a list of quotes around the topics of grief, remembrance and life. It was the small moments like this, from caring teachers like Mr. Spencer, that helped put me together again when I was in a million pieces. Mr. Spencer helped shape me into the person and teacher I am today and I will forever be grateful for the influence he had on my life. To Em and Rosie, I hope you find some comfort and peace in the words your Dad shared with me and my friends so many years ago. And to Mr. Spencer, I just know Pam greeted you home with the biggest hug and a shy thanks for taking such good care of us all.

Jim was an incredible teacher and human being. He was kind, thoughtful, humble, and always there when you needed him. He made learning fun and gave his students and colleagues the courage to learn and try new things. He gave a gentle but firm push. He loved his wife and children and the simple things in life. My children were grateful to have him as a teacher and I am grateful to have known him. He was a role model for what a man should be. I will miss him but always remember him.

Jim was an outstanding human being. I enjoyed working with Jim at P.H.H.S. for 18 years. We once travelled together to Waterloo to participate in a training workshop on Geographical Information Systems. We had great conversations on that journey and listened to some fun music. Jim was universally loved by his students and colleagues. I know that Julie, Emily, and Rosie and Jim’s extended family and friends will grieve his death for a long time. They will, at least, have a wealth of incredible memories of their time with Jim to cherish for a lifetime. Cancer can never take that away from us!

As a PHHS graduate (circa 2000) I will say with confidence that 'Spence' will be missed profoundly within the student community, both past and present. My favourite attribute about Mr. Spencer's teaching style was to teach us with respect. He provided discipline and not punishment when required, and in Grade 9 most students need to be taught discipline in order to be successful for life in later years. Thank you Spence for showing respect and giving discipline when needed. ❤
Deepest sympathies to his family and friends

Dear Julie, Emily and Rosie
I was shocked to hear this news, a fraction I'm sure of what you all have likely been going through. Every time I would have the opportunity to bump into, chat with, or commiserate with Jim I was always left with a smile on my face and feeling happy we'd had the chance to connect once again. He was a positive force for those around him, no doubt in large part because of the love and good fortune he had experienced through all of you. As I'm sure you're now keenly aware how much he is going to be missed throughout the entire community. He embodied the best parts of Port Hope and touched the lives of so many. He was a rare gem and will be greatly missed by many.
Today you grieve and the void will remain, but in time the love and warm memories will resurface. You have an entire community behind you and whatever you may need there will be people available and ready to help, ourselves included.
Peace and love to all of you.

Thanks for being a good friend.
To Julie, Mr. and Mrs. Spencer, Laurie and Vicky, I am so sorry for your loss. He was a very good friend and fine person. My condolences.

Jim was such a great teacher and coach to me while at PHHS. The senior soccer teams all appreciated his dedication and sense of humour. He continued to be a support to me after I got into teaching and coaching within the board. He was one of a kind, and I’ll always cherish the fond memories I have of him.

I met Jim and Julie when I started teaching at PHHS in 1999. During those years, there were many of us who were new in our teaching careers - navigating busy work lives with the sleepless nights of new parenthood. I remember one particular day when I found myself in tears battling morning sickness and a challenging class. Jim calmly reminded me that I would be okay and that I could get through the day and that the next one would be better...which it was. He was great at helping put life into perspective and helped me take myself a little less seriously! I always considered Jim an "old soul" - an intelligent, sharp-witted, educator who had high expectations for his students. Jim was generous with his time, and someone who could be counted on for sound and honest advice. Julie - my deepest condolences to you and your family.

Mr.Spencer taught me more than history and sport. He taught me how to navigate life. He knew a teaching moment when he saw one. The one thing I carried away from high school came from him, it was just simply never give up. When he said “you can’t give up just because things get hard” he wasn’t talking about the school work, he was preparing us for life. I can’t even begin to imagine how many lives he touched, but I sure hope in some way he did. You will be missed but never forgotten.

Deeply saddened to hear this tragic news. Jimmy was a good, good man. I'm immediately drawn back to 1980 (or thereabouts) when I remember looking up with admiration and reverence to this kind, talented, warmhearted person. Incredible athlete. Natural leader. Good family. The kind of person who made others feel a little better about themselves. Jimmy, you'll be deeply missed. Rest in peace.

This is so sad. He was such an amazing guy. I was pregnant with my eldest daughter, Lydia when he taught me at PHHS in 1996. I used to freak him out (unintentionally) by rubbing the top of my belly to push her foot back down because it would get caught under the desk. He’d stand at the front of the class while teaching a lesson and suddenly yell “Are you ok!??” I was mortified every.single.time!
Jimmy was respected by all of us, friends to most of us later in our adulthood, and even taught both of my daughters in the next round. We all admired him very much.
My sincere condolences to his entire family, friend circle, staff and students feeling this loss at PHHS. Rest In Peace Mr Spencer xox

I had the pleasure of having Mr Spencer as a coach and teacher during my years at PHHS. He really had a knack for making you laugh, and as someone recently said, he made everyone feel important. I remember him razzing me on the badminton court, giving my brother and I a hard time for ‘beating each other’ instead of the other team beating us at the game.
Another time he caught me limping down the hall with a sprained ankle because I was too proud to wear my brace, and gave me a caring, but sarcastic talking to about how I would need surgery on my ankle if I didn’t smarten up.
I’m so thankful to have met him so briefly, and still remember him so vividly. That’s just the kind of guy he was.
I’m truly sorry to his family and loved ones, what an incredible loss. I know he impacted so so many people in his career as a teacher and a coach and will live on in all the memories and life lessons he instilled in everyone he met.

Jim you will be missed. Your family first attuitude, your humour, your teaching enthusiasm, and your love of life. My first memory of Jim was during my first year of teaching at PHHS. Jim was Prime Minister and I was awarded a "Pretty in Pink" teacher award at the end of year assembly by Jim and Deputy Prime Shannon McFadden. Jim went off to university only to return to PHHS to teach history. Our educational friendship and personal friendship started. I remember many spring, summer and fall golf rounds at Dalewood, and surrounding courses, the annual teacher tournaments, the boys golf trip to some "special" course. There were a few fall trips to Buffalo to watch the Bills (sort of), which I think were more for the pre/post tailgating rather than watching the Bills play. Walking the dog, specifically by his house, and ending up having a beverage (or 2/3) in the garage, impromptu dinners with Julie, your girls, Lynn and I, and just sitting around and chatting about everything. Rest in peace my friend

My oldest and the best kind of friend. Years often went by between seeing each other, it never mattered. We spent many evenings with Tex winning the Masters on the 9th green at Port Hope Golf Club. No surprise that he became a great teacher. He once corrected the grammar of one of my profanity-laced sentences while sitting on the bench in the middle of a hockey game. True story. Jim was whip-smart, kind and often the one who made sure our gang of mischief makers didn't get into any real trouble. I am going to miss my friend.
