Mr. Fortier was my all time favourite teacher. He spoke to his students as equals and never was condescending. He was always approachable and always presented topics in an interesting way which made it so much easier to learn from him. R I P

You had to get up pretty early to beat Steve to a yard sale. His knowledge of Military was legendary and he was always generous and passionate when sharing his vast knowledge.
Sincere condolences Robyn, to you and your family. Saturday mornings just won’t be the same.

I am honoured to have known and loved Steve. You couldn't have been in his company and not come away feeling better about yourself and your time spent with him. Unlike my sisters', Steve was never my teacher, however, if ever I was in need of brotherly advice or a sounding board Steve was an excellent choice.
Although our family dynamics evolved, Stephen remained absolutely loved and respected for his commitment to his children.
Our sincere condolences to Stephanie, Lindsey, Corey, Hailey, Robyn, Paul and grandchildren.

Mr. Fortier was my French teacher at Courtice High School in 1979.
He was a great man and the best teacher ever.
He liked to play chess and I played a few games with him.
He also played the guitar really well and did so on stage
at our school during a talent show.
He will be missed greatly!

What I remember most about Steve from high school days is his wonderful sense of humour and gentle nature. When we reconnected by e-mail more than 50 years later, those qualities were still there.

I was so sorry to hear that Steve is no longer with us. I've know him since the late 70s (through teaching) and our paths crossed from time to time. I always enjoyed chatting with him. My memory of him is of a gentle, likable, positive person and he will be missed by many.

Steve was one of my teachers at Courtice High. He was one of the best. I always looked forward to his classes. It was always an adventure in learning and having fun at the same time. He was also eventually my brother-in-law for a period of time and I had the pleasure of being the aunt of Stephanie and Lindsey. Steve was not only a great teacher but a wonderful man and father and grandfather to his children and grandchildren. My thoughts are with you all, Robyn, Stephanie, Lindsey, Hailey and Cory. Also his brother Paul. Steve touched so many lives an we are all better for it. Thanks Steve for that.

To Robyn and family from Neil Carleton in Almonte …it was such sad news to learn this afternoon of Steve’s passing. I’m so sorry for your loss. My friendship with Steve … aka Phluse … dates back to our high school years in Prescott. Attached for sharing is a 1968 photo that was published in the Prescott Journal about the summer job that he, Tom Dickey and I had at South Grenville District High School repairing textbooks. We reconnected again in 2008 by email when Steve saw my name posted for the SGDHS 50th reunion. Our correspondence of the past fourteen years covered a remarkable variety of topics … including travel adventures, Prescott recollections, mystery of time’s acceleration, historical research, philosophy of retirement, richness of family … along with the contagious fun of puns. I’d be grateful to know if the memorial service will be accessible online.

Our sincere and heart felt sympathy; Robyn and family. As a vice principal, Steve was always supportive of teachers. He was a good raconteur and had an easy manner in dealing with students. Steve always had the students’ best interest at heart. I enjoyed working with him.

"Uncle" Steve will be greatly missed by our family. A constant supportive presence growing up (my Dad was his close friend from college days, colleagues in the public school system, re-enactment enthusiasts and road trippers)... we will always remember that mischievous grin and sparkle in his eyes as he anticipated making a pun out of some innocuous statement you were making... He always listened... carefully, thoughtfully, compassionately, with a wealth of historical knowledge and insight. It is hard to exclude from any capsule biography of Steve the endless forays into the world of antiques, militaria, and his appreciation of found art and artefacts. He would often show up from a sortie with a treasure he had 'pillaged' for us (and no doubt for all of you) from the dark recesses of some forgotten flea market somewhere to the outskirts of the city... His basement was "museum grade" and truly a sight to behold. I grew up with Stephanie and Lindsey and they shared Steve's disposition, his warmth and spirit. Steve and Robyn were great friends to my parents, John and Adriana... constant companionship, trips to Europe, adventure and shared interests. We offer our love and sympathy to Robyn. There is no doubt that Steve was greatly admired and appreciated by all who knew him. He was a kind man of principle and humanistic in nature. Gabrielle and I wish his friends and family whatever comfort is possible at this time. As Napoleon wrote to General Lauriston, "La mort n'est rien, mais vivre vaincu et sans gloire, c'est mourir tous les jours." Steve lived with a sense of the (quiet) glory of life, history, family and community. It is how we will remember him... with his sense of humour, mischievous white moustache, wavy hair, relaxed demeanour... smiling, ready for the next chapter.

Sometimes in life you're lucky enough to have someone walk part of the journey with you that makes you a better person because of it. Stephen believed in me as a person and as a teacher and welcomed me into the Howard Jordan family. He encouraged and inspired me to go into Special Education. He stood by me every step of the way. I can't thank him enough for what he did all those decades ago. I'm so saddened to hear of his passing. I send heartfelt condolences to Robyn and his whole family. May the wonderful memories of this fine man be his legacy as you deal with your grief.
Fare thee well, Stephen.

We have known Steve for almost 50 years. He was thoughtful, kind, had a great sense of humour and very much a family man. We had the pleasure of Steve and Robyn's company on a cruise in the Caribbean in 2019. A lot of fun was had by all. In the picture Steve and friends were admiring his newest toy. Taken far too early. He will be sorely missed.
