James Allen Poynton

Obituary of James Allen Poynton

James Allen Poynton, 96, passed away peacefully in Cobourg, Ontario, on October 18, 2022. Jim will be remembered with love by son Charles, daughter Peggy, and granddaughters, Brenna and Alana. Jim is predeceased by his wife Jean (d. 2022), and sons, David (d. 1982), and Allen (d. 2019).

Jim was a creative person who was a fount of knowledge about all manner of subjects. He was a builder of bridges and a designer of houses. Jim was a fine draftsman, and a history buff. He loved to collect words ("indubitably"). At heart, he was a storyteller. Jim learned to play the Great Highland bagpipes in his mid-teens; his pipes travelled with him throughout his life. He was a founding member of the Port Hope Pipe Band. During the last year of WWII, Jim served in the Fleet Air Arm of the Royal Navy. He was a stalwart member of the much-storied Cobourg football team the Galloping Ghosts during their Dominion Championship runs in 1946 and 1948. With his partners in Ganaraska Bridge Company, Jim built many bridges and other lasting works throughout Ontario.

Jim and Jean enjoyed many friendships in the Turks and Caicos Islands. In latter years, they travelled extensively, and enjoyed life in the rolling countryside north of Brighton. Jim leaves this blessing: "Lang may yer lum reek!" A gathering of friends and family will be held at a later time.
