I want to express my deepest condolences to Rick's family and all who loved him. I met Coach Traugott when he and I organized a hockey tournament in FL back in the early 90's. We stayed in touch for many years and after I took my current job at Gilmour Academy, Rick was the first prep team to invite my young squad to a prep tournament at Trinity College. Over the 30 plus years I knew him, he was the consummate professional, a generous host, an amazing coach and just a wonderful person to be around. I can only imagine the tremendous impact he has had on so many young lives. Trinity College, Prep Hockey and hockey in general has lost an amazing leader and wonderful man. I speak for the entire Gilmour Academy community in expressing my and ours sincerest sympathy to his family.

I wasn't close to Rick but kept tabs on him through the Scott family. Over time the hole left by his passing will mend but his honour and graciousness will continue to resonate in them everyday for the rst of their lives. I've heard many people say that they hope to leave this world a little better than they came into.....Well Rick....you've done that in spades!!
RIP Rick and thank you for brightening and enriching all of our lives.

To all of Rick's family:
My memories of Rick go back to his years of playing in Leaside Baseball beginning in 1975 through his years with our Junior team where he was league MVP. Of course, he also spent some time coaching. We did pass some messages through mutual friends for
the past few years. It was gratifying, but not surprising to see one of our "kids" go on to become such a universally respected and admired teacher and coach. Leaside Baseball extends our most sincere condolences.

Dear Sue, Jenna, Katie and Ben,
Words cannot express my sadness in hearing of Rick’s passing. Rick was my TCS hockey coach in the late 80s when he was early in his career and not much older than his players. He was a superb coach and an even better person who had the respect of everyone on the team. We connected only infrequently over the years since then, but when we did, I always felt like I was talking with an old friend or big brother that I trusted completely. Rick always spoke fondly of his family, and was incredibly proud of you. I feel like I know you all even though we’ve never met. Please accept my sincerest condolences.

I knew Rick from age 12 at UCC. I am shocked and just so sad to hear this terrible news. My memories of Rick date mostly from many yrs ago but I’m sure that everyone who has had the pleasure of knowing him will be able to relate to the way he made me feel. Although we were peers, I looked up to him with admiration. His multisport excellence accomplished through natural ability, drive and determination were impressive. Hockey and baseball weren’t surprising but when he started excelling in newly learned soccer, cricket and cross-country running I was blown away. He used ‘visualization’ as a technique to improve his performance. I remember him being motivated by Rocky’s ‘The eye of the tiger’. His leadership skills were very evident when he brought together some of the school’s top musicians to form his band ‘Channel One’. He was confident but not in a boastful way. I watched as he would accept a compliment with a warm smile, firm handshake and a ‘thanks very much’. He maintained a self-deprecating modesty that was endearing. He told a story from U of T hockey when coach Watt was blasting his team after a loss saying that it was pretty bad that the only one who scored was the unknown rookie named Traugott.( oh yeah… he scored a perfect 800 on his math SAT!)
Many yrs later he looked me up in Ottawa a couple of times when he was travelling for work. We went for a skate on the canal and a coffee. He told me how proud he was of his wife and children. I never had the pleasure of meeting his family… but please accept my condolences from afar. David MacMillan

I had the good fortune to get to know Rick Traugott over the last few years- and like many, consider myself spectacularly lucky to have been able to spend time, learn from and be influenced by him. To say Rick was a giant in the hockey world is a colossal understatement, in rinks all over not only the province but truly throughout North America, when referencing Port Hope or Trinity College School, people always asked if I knew Rick Traugott and how he was- as his reach was and is truly global. Furthermore, everyone who asked about Rick, followed their inquiry up with a positive anecdote or recalled an interaction that set Rick above the rest. Personally, I will miss casual chats with Rick in the dining hall or the rink, checking in with him throughout the season, seeing how his teams are doing or what he's up to next. Rick had a profoundly positive influence on me and his zest for life and desire to do the right thing no matter what was going on and his eternal optimism are lessons that will live on and I will remember for years to come. My thoughts and prayers are with Rick's family through this trying time- know that the community at large is there for you and Rick's legacy and the positive impact he had on so many will live on for generations.

I was a brand new teacher at TCS in the late 90s. Rick went out of his way to take care of me. He checked in always, with his warm smile and reassuring comments. He was so deeply kind and supportive and he had no responsibility to do this - we weren’t in the same department or co-coaches. He just saw someone who needed support and freely gave it when I could give nothing in return. He probably never knew it but he had a massive impact on my career. His true love of guiding and developing others has been such an inspiration to me. I ran into him a few years ago and his passion for helping young people achieve their dreams and goals was just as strong. A remarkably beautiful and deeply impactful person. I am so blessed and honoured to have known this man. My heart goes out to his family he loved with a depth that was palpable.

To the Traugott family. Coach Rick was more than just a coach to me. I played for the toronto Junior Aeros hockey team. I played for him in the 2023-24 season and was looking forward to the upcoming one. Rick was a friend and at the rink I considered him more like family. He cared about me on and off the ice more than a coach had to. He made sure I was up to date with my grades, and checked on me after a bad day. He would always make me feel so confident and appreciated on the team. I am going to miss his random jokes he would make, as well as his inspirational comments about the podcasts he would listen to on his ride to the rink, they never failed to put a smile on my face. His love for the sport and especially our team was exceptional. He cared about us girls so much and made sure we got the best support possible. I know that he was incredibly excited for this coming season to get started on August 16. I am going to miss our carpools to the rink and stoping at tim Hortons to get his coffee and apple fritter along with seeing him 4-5 days a week on the ice and at the rink. Coach I know you will be watching us all season and every game and practice cheering us on, we will make sure to make you proud every time we step on the ice.

Sue, Jenna, Katie, and Ben,
I am still numb from shock. Rick was my cousin, but he felt more like my younger brother. I took it as a given that he would outlive me. Although he had some surprises in his life, he had an unshakeable understanding of himself, anchored as he was by his family. He was an only child who dreamed of a big, loving family. It was his joy in life that he found it. Hold onto that comfort as you learn to live with this heartbreak.

Dear Sue, Jenna, Katie, and Ben,
It is hard to comprehend the very sad news of Rick's passing - I'm sure the same is true for you too. He was such a positive, passionate, and compassionate man. I so appreciate that Laiken was lucky enough to be coached by him. Rick's knowledge, talent and love of coaching were obvious. What impressed me most though was the way he communicated with the team. As a hockey mom, I received his motivational emails too and was wowed by the power of Rick's written word. Certainly the players were elevated by his guidance, and for me also, just reading his messages made me strive to be especially kind and understanding, to give my all, to aim to be my best self. I also remember chance morning meet-ups in the Russell House parking lot. Often with the dogs in tow, Rick, always smiling, always had a story to share. Moments of conversation with Rick made the day brighter. His pride for all of you was clear when he shared tidbits of your lives when I asked what all of you were up to. Wishing you strength and sending big hugs. XO

My heartfelt thoughts and prayers go out to the Traugott family, friends, sports professionals, and former student-athletes who were fortunate to know him. I first met Rick in 2002, and over the years, we became good friends, sharing a deep love for hockey and exploring various ways to approach the game. It makes me sad that you are gone at such a young age. Rest easy Rick!

My sincere condolences to the Traugott family. My heart goes out to you. I was lucky to know this wonderful family and especially Katie throughout these many years with the special friendship she shares with my daughter. As Katie said to me recently “he was my most favourite person in the whole world”
TCS has lost a very special man who will not be forgotten in all he did for the community.
Rest in peace

Despite not knowing him well when I was a student, since graduating TCS everytime I have seen Mr. Traugott he had a huge smile on his face and recognized me instantly. He always wanted to know how I was doing and talked to me like an old friend. His energy and aura are what make TCS truly feel like a family. My deepest condolences go to his family.

We were so shocked and saddened by Rick's sudden passing. Our deepest condolences go out to Sue, Jenna, Katie and Ben. Just so you all know, Rick's impact on the world has global reaches as we are mourning his loss from Shanghai China. Rick personified TCS well: Confident, bold when needed, but never arrogant and a kind warm heart always. His memory will live on in our hearts and we wish his family, through this very difficult time, peace and comfort knowing he had a global impact around the world.

Sue, Jenna, Katie and Ben - my thoughts are with all of you. Rick was a pleasure to work with and his smile and enthusiasm will be dearly missed. We had many chats about hockey and ball and really all sports. Never did he pass by my office without yelling ‘Caine’ and in return he would hear ‘Traugott’. His love for his family was always evident when we chatted. He was always so proud of each of you.
Oh ‘Traugott’ I will miss you and am so honoured that I had the chance to get to know you over the last 22 years at TCS. RIP Rick.

Dear Sue, Jenna, Katie and Ben,
I'm at a complete loss upon hearing the news of Rick's passing. I can only imagine how each of you is feeling. I wanted to reach out to share with you the deep respect I felt for Rick.
Rick was always present around the School - didn't matter what his "official" role was, he was involved and connected all over the place. Whenever I saw him, he wouldn't be satisfied with a quick hello or a head nod. He wanted to know how things were going in Grade 5 or the Junior School. He would ask how I was doing and he would mean it. He was always genuine and helpful.
From the first day that I met Jenna, in Gr. 5, to the last day that I taught Ben in Gr. 5 (with Katie, in between!), I have had the loveliest topics to chat with Rick about. He never tired of hearing how exceptional and unique each one of you kids was. He would light up to hear your name and he would want to hear more. He was always tremendously proud to report to me what you were up to at that given time.
Sue - together with Rick, you two are responsible for raising 3 of the greatest humans that TCS ever called students. I've said that time and time again...and couldn't mean it more than right now. Jenna, Katie, and Ben - you carry on your Dad's legacy of being genuine and helpful people, no matter where you find yourselves.
With much love and sympathy,
Heather McClure

Traugotts - I am so sorry to hear of Rick’s sudden passing. You all must be so devastated. Like so many Ketchumites, Rick and your family were an integral part of my teen years. He and all of you were our safe place and I have fond memories of Rick. Most of all, I remember him as being an amazing father and partner to all of you. I hope that his memories bring you some peace.

Sue, Jenna, Katie, Ben….I truly have not enough words to describe what Rick meant to me. I honestly believe he was probably one of the kindest human beings I have ever met and the world needs more people like him. He was at TCS when my mom and dad were working there, then we were friends through minor hockey and then as colleagues at TCS. Our office is a very special place and it definitely is not the same without him. He was one of a kind and will be missed. Hugs to you all.
