Obituary of Ernest Roy Hammond
Hammond, Ernest Roy Lieutenant Commander Ernest Roy Hammond, P.Eng, C.D. Roy Hammond was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on August 7th, 1915. He went through St. Johns College School there and did one year in St. John?s College (pre science), followed by taking a B.Sc. at the University of Manitoba. Roy?s entering the Royal Military College in 1934 made him the first gentleman cadet to enter RMC with a university degree. He graduated from RMC in 1938 with the Civil Engineering specialty and the Governor General?s Gold Medal. While a gentleman cadet Roy did RCNVR Training in Halifax in the summers and so was commissioned a Sub Lieutenant on graduation. When WWII started, due to delay in being called up he went to work in Trinidad in the oilfields for a year and a half. He was in Fort York (delivering her to Saint John for the RN), Bayfield, Clayoquot, Algoma, Niagara and Prince Robert (as Torpedo Officer (t)). Roy was on the (T) course in Britain when the War ended. Settling in Montreal he was in HMCS Donnacona for the rest of his reserve time. Roy did civil engineering after active service. He was on the NRV Atomic Energy project. He was on the staff of the St. Lawrence Seaway Authority throughout the St. Lawrence Seaway project as Specifications Engineer. He did project engineering with H.G. Acres, with Shawinigan Water and Power, and with the Public Service of Canada. He had been living in Port Hope, Ontario, since 1980. Lieutenant Commander Hammond died at Cobourg on Saturday July 26, 2003 in his 88th year. Leaving his wife, the former Margaret (Peggy) O?Neill R.N. He is survived by his daughter Patricia (Peter Maidment) of Calgary and Eric of Port Hope. Also survived by his granddaughters Margaret and Erica Maidment.
