Obituary of Mona Beatrice Pitt

Pitt, Mona Beatrice (Murphy), L. Mus, B.Mus - Peacefully at the Northumberland Hills Hospital, Cobourg on Tuesday December 24, 2019 at the age of 91. Beloved wife of the late Frederick Thomas Pitt. Loving mother to Mary of Toronto; Helen and John Matthew of Port Hope; Kathy and Peter Berktold of Dornbirn, Austria; Fred of Collingwood and Therese of Berlin, Germany, and loving grandmother to Liann Berktold. Also survived by many nieces and nephews. Mona was born on May 11, 1928 in London, Ontario to John and Florence Murphy. Her love of music began at an early age; she was a member of the School of Christ Choir in London, the Orpheus Ladies Choir under the direction of Irene Bird, and studied Voice under Alfred Rose, and Ernesto Vinci. Married on October 7th, 1950, Mona and her husband Fred raised their five children while sharing their love of music and amateur theatre in both Ontario and Quebec. After their move to Montreal in 1959 Mona continued Voice Studies with Bernard Diamant and Kathleen and Winston Purdy. She was a founding member of The St. Lawrence Choir, Montreal, and in 1979 she received her Bachelor of Music degree in Voice from McGill University. Mona helped others discover the joy of singing over the years as a voice teacher, choir director and choral clinician. She was choir director at St. Michael’s Church in London, Ontario and at St. John Fisher Parish in Pointe Claire, Quebec. Mona and Fred were also performing members of the London seniors’ theatre group “The Nostalgic Thespians” or “TNTs”, for over 25 years. Upon Fred’s retirement in 1980, Mona and Fred returned to Ontario. After a few years living in London they moved to Southampton, where they enjoyed living on the shore of Lake Huron. In 2005 they returned to London and in 2009 moved to the Scarborough Retirement Centre. After Fred passed away in 2016, Mona moved to Roseglen Village for Seniors in Port Hope, close to her daughter Helen and her husband John. A visitation will be held on Friday January 17, 2020 from 2-4 and 6-8 pm at the Allison Funeral Home, 103 Mill Street North, Port Hope.
