Obituary of Elizabeth Ann Collins
Collins, Elizabeth Ann
On the morning of June 3, 2020, at the age of 88, Elizabeth Ann Collins (Betty) passed away peacefully of natural causes at Northumberland Hills Hospital.
Betty grew up in Millbrook, Ontario, and lived most of her adult life in Port Hope. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Jim, whom she married in 1955.
Betty graduated nursing from The Hospital for Sick Children in 1953 and spent her career caring for others in both hospital and public health settings, working as the Director of Nursing for the Haliburton Kawartha Pine Ridge District Health Unit for many years.
She was a passionate member of the community and was proud to have served as the first female mayor of The Town of Port Hope. She was also the first Chairperson of the Port Hope Police Services Board; a title that was changed from the previous ‘Chairman’ for the first time since the mid 1800’s.
To those who knew her, she was much more than these professional accomplishments. Betty was a loving wife, a proud mother, a doting grandmother, a supportive sister, a constant friend, an encouraging aunt, and a strong woman. The caring spirit that wove through her career in nursing also surrounded those who mattered most to her.
She will be greatly missed by her family and friends, including: her children, Cyndi Gilmer (Jeff) and Mark Collins (Laura); her grandchildren, Christopher Gilmer (Keely Jacox), Brian Gilmer (Amy Bronkhorst), Jennifer Gilmer (Ken Graham), Brianna Collins, Aliyah Collins, and Aislyn Collins; and her siblings, Alan Wright (Marilyn) and Helen Swift (David).
If Desired, Memorial Contributions may be made by cheque to Northumberland Hills Hospital Foundation or Five Counties Children’s Centre.
