We have only just learned of the passing of Uwe Meyer and although many years have past since we listened to his wonderful
voice welcoming the audience to The Capital Theatre and always asking " who came the farthest today?" and when the hand
went up and told us where they were from, a cool drink on the house awaited them at Intermission.
Every time we had the pleasure of seeing a play at The Capital Theatre, we looked forward to our artistic director,Uwe Meyer,
coming out on stage and welcoming everyone with grace and humour.
It was the year 2007 when we travelled to Italy for vacation and in a small town, Cortona, where our touring group stopped for
lunch at a wonderful little cafe and who could be seated next to our table but Uwe Meyer and his lovely wife.
Imagine a couple from Cobourg and a couple from Port Hope meeting in Italy at the same cafe and seated next to each other!!
We marvelled at our Port Hope theatre connection and then took photos to remember the moment. We will share that photo.
Thank you Uwe Meyer for the joy you brought to us the audience by your presence on stage as well as the wonderful plays
under your direction which we had the pleasure of seeing...Rest in Peace.

It is with sadness and dismay to learn of
the passing of Uwe so late after the fact.
Condolences and sympathy are extended
to Frank, Uta, Una and family.
Comfort and strength and peace are
wished for Andrea and family.
Uwe's candour, wit, warmth and enthusiasm
that he brought to any family gathering
will never be forgotten. His intellectual
breadth made growing up easier.
Again my apologies in the delay, lapses and delays in pandemic communication
have resulted in such a late notice.
Somewhere the curtain goes up, and for
Uwe I hope many more undiscovered
secrets and treasures of country music.

Dear Andrea:
It is hard for me to realise that Uwe has left us - and far too soon. It was my privilege to know and work with him during my years on the board of the Capitol Theatre. I admired his talent, breadth of knowledge, and charming personality. He was not only an inspiring leader at the Capitol, he became, through his selfless contribution, a pillar of the community. My sincere condolences to you and family. May Port Hope never forget that he was here.
Ronald Coleman.

Andrea and family, I was shocked and saddened to learn of Uwe's passing. It was my pleasure to volunteer at the Capitol for many years and work with Uwe on many things. He was a professional in every sense of the word. The shows he produced were first rate and I am sure that you know how much the volunteers thought of him. My deepest sympathies

My heartfelt condolences to his beloved Andrea, all family and friends. Gone too soon.
Your loss is shared by many who care and sympathize more than words can say.
Am grateful to have known Uwe before and after the renovation of the Capital Theatre. But it is Capital Christmas that will always make me smile.
Not many impresarios, summer festival directors and then Panto creators, producers, would still be cheerful at the end of the year, while untangling and hanging hundreds upon hundreds of Twinkie lights for thousands to adore. Magical. We decorated the new studio, he with a boyish grin and sparkle in his eye setting up the train set Christmas display. It was a busy time of season, and he even made it back for the curtain speech for the naughty Panto ( sometimes to our chagrin!)
Quite the man, Quite a life. Rest in Peace Uwe.

So very sorry to hear of Uwe's sudden passing. I always enjoyed his shows at the Capitol, driving in from Pickering when I worked in downtown Toronto, often bringing friends along with me and when I was able to move to Port Hope, I was able to attend more often.. He was sorely missed by many patrons of the Capitol. My sister Cindy Fortner worked with Uwe at the Capitol in the office for his term there. How sad it is that they both passed on within hours of each other this past weekend. Wherever their souls may be, I like to think they are both somewhere working in another theatre.

Uwe's generosity to me as an actress and playwright really helped shape my career and for that I am grateful. He filled the rehearsal hall with laughter as he brought many wonderful casts and crews together for so many shows. His love for his family, theatre and his community was always very evident. My condolences to Andrea and all of Uwe's family and friends. RIP. He will be dearly missed. May his garden thrive.

A passionate theatre maker has passed away and I will miss him ... not only as a producer, but as a colleague and friend.
I always enjoyed working with Uwe, doing music direction on 6 shows including 2 of his hilarious pantos.
He made me laugh, he gave me many opportunities and he trusted the work.
And he planted one hell of a garden.
We were hoping post-pandemic to get in a visit in that garden.
Thank you for all you did for so many in the theatre community. You were truly a prince among men.
Our deepest sympathies to Andrea and the family.

Andrea,
So sorry to hear this sad news. Uwe was so helpful when I joined the radio station, always making time to answer my questions and he always asked me how I was doing whenever we had the good fortune to be in studio together. He loved to interact with his listeners and he was quick to share his special insights into songs and stories that spoke to them. I will miss him, his wit, his charm, and his need to have a news report at 11 am on Fridays. I am a better radio person because of the time I was able to spend with him.
Much love and support,
Marc Cowin

So sorry Andrea. I'm shocked. Uwe directed me on so many shows I can't remember how many. Had a blast on all. Met some amazing people because he hired me for those shows. One of the most memorable shows for me ever, period, was The 39 Steps. I'm sad thinking he's gone but smiling when I think of the show. Thanks Uwe. Break-A-Leg as you move forward!
