Obituary of Alexander Vanderkam

Vanderkam, Alexander – Passed in his 67th year, in London, Ontario, on September 10th, 2021. Alex, son of the late Peter & Mary, beloved husband of Linda (nee Hunter), devoted father of Heather (Graham Young) and Brad (Julie Hobby), and Opa to Gabriel, Mitchell, Cameron and Bryce. Alex was born in Holland.  He immigrated to Canada with his parents at the  age of one. His siblings, Robert, Mark & Carolyn were born here.  He spent his youth living in Terrace Bay, on the north shore of Lake Superior.  He moved to southern Ontario where he attended Waterloo University and then north again receiving his teaching degree at Nipissing University, in North Bay.  During that time, he met Linda, the love of his life.  They were married for 41 wonderful years.  Alex worked at the Oxford Regional Centre in Woodstock as a residential counselor for the mentally disabled.  Later he became a teacher and then an elementary school principal.  Alex volunteered as the president of the Thames Valley Trail Association and as a Master Official with Swim Ontario.  He loved spending time at the cottage, camping with friends, but most of all he loved spending time with family. A private service will be held at Allison’s Funeral Home on Friday, September 17th at 1:00 p.m. There will be a link to the live stream of the service at aprod.com/alex. Internment at Wesleyville Cemetery will follow the service. If desired, memorial contributions can be made to the Thames Valley Trail Association, (www.tvta.ca), towards improvements and conservation for some of Alex’s favourite hiking trails, or to a charity of your choice in honour of Alex. Alex is gone from our sight, but never from our hearts.
